Fishing from shore was rewarding, but taking a boat allowed me to reach the lake’s deeper areas, where larger fish could be found. The scenery here is absolutely stunning, and the fishing was both peaceful and thrilling.
Pyramid Lake
Just north of Reno, Pyramid Lake was unlike any place I’d fished before. Famous for its massive Lahontan cutthroat trout, this lake has a unique charm with its dramatic desert setting. Fishing here felt almost otherworldly, and the local fishing community has great respect for this lake and its fish. Shore fishing was exciting, and I managed to land a few solid catches with a fly rod—an experience I’ll definitely never forget.
Lake Mead
As one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the U.S., Lake Mead offers an expansive fishing experience with diverse fish populations, from striped bass to catfish. I spent a few days here, trying out both boat fishing and shore fishing. Some of my best catches were striped bass, and there’s a vast area to explore, so every outing felt like a new adventure. With its rugged landscape and varied fishing spots, Lake Mead is a must-visit.

The application process is simple and can be done online, so it’s easy to plan your fishing trip.
