Fishing Trips in New Orleans

New Orleans is a fantastic destination for fishing in Louisiana, offering a wide range of experiences for anglers of all levels. Whether you’re interested in the coastal waters, bayous, or the many lakes around the city, New Orleans has something for everyone. Based on my own trips, I can say it’s a great place for fishing, with plenty of different fish species and beautiful scenery.

Why fish in New Orleans?

On my fishing trips around New Orleans, I found a great mix of saltwater and freshwater fishing. The coastal waters of the Gulf of Mexico are rich with fish like redfish and speckled trout, while the nearby lakes and bayous offer peaceful settings for catching bass and catfish. New Orleans’ warm weather means you can enjoy fishing here almost any time of the year.

Gulf of Mexico

The Gulf of Mexico near New Orleans is perfect for sea fishing. I’ve had great experiences fishing along the coast of Grand Isle, where I caught redfish and flounder. One of my most exciting trips was during a deep-sea fishing charter, where I reeled in a large red snapper—an unforgettable moment!

You can fish from shore, piers, or boats, and there’s always a chance to catch something big. For beginners, piers like the ones in Grand Isle or near Venice offer easy access to great fishing spots. More experienced anglers can go offshore to catch larger fish like tuna and amberjack.

Inland Lakes and Bayous

New Orleans is also surrounded by lakes and bayous that offer excellent freshwater fishing. One of my favorite spots is Lake Pontchartrain, where I’ve caught speckled trout and catfish. The bayous are perfect for a peaceful day of fishing, and places like Bayou St. John are known for their bass and bluegill.

If you’re looking for a quiet escape from the city, the nearby lakes and bayous are ideal for a relaxing fishing trip in a scenic environment.

Tips for fishing in New Orleans

Based on my experiences, timing is important when fishing in New Orleans. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to catch fish like redfish in the Gulf or bass in the lakes. Using live bait like shrimp or mullet can help attract bigger fish. Joining a local fishing charter or hiring a guide is also a great way to learn about the best fishing spots and techniques in the area, increasing your chances of a successful trip.

Preparations

  1. Applying for an ESTA or eTA
When planning a fishing trip to the U.S. or Canada, it’s crucial to apply for the necessary travel authorizations. For the U.S., the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) allows you to stay for up to three months and is valid for two years. The application is straightforward and can be done online. For Canada, an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) permits stays of up to six months and is valid for five years.
  2. Getting a Fishing License
In addition to an ESTA or eTA, you need a fishing license to legally fish in the U.S. or Canada. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uses the proceeds from fishing licenses to fund conservation efforts. In the U.S., fishing license requirements and costs vary by state, typically ranging from $10 to $30. You can purchase licenses online or at local retailers.

In Canada, fishing license regulations vary by province. In British Columbia, for example, an annual fishing license costs about 100 CAD, while a five-day license costs around 30 CAD. These licenses are also available online or at local stores.
  3. Planning Your Fishing Adventure
With your ESTA or eTA and fishing licenses in hand, you’re ready to explore some of the most fantastic fishing spots in North America. Whether you’re chasing tuna in the warm waters of the Florida Keys or experiencing the grandeur of Alaska’s salmon runs, the adventures are endless. So, book your flights, pack your gear, and get ready for an unforgettable fishing trip in the diverse and beautiful landscapes of the United States.
