Fishing Trip in the United States: Top Destinations & Tips

Fishing has always been a passion of mine, and exploring new fishing destinations around the world is an exciting challenge. Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of embarking on several fishing trips across America, each offering unique experiences and breathtaking locations. Here’s a glimpse into some of my favorite fishing adventures in the U.S., from the sunny shores of Florida to the rugged landscapes of Alaska.

Florida

The Florida Keys
The Florida Keys, known as the fishing capital of the world, is a must-visit for any angler. I spent several days in Islamorada, a hotspot for catching a variety of fish including tarpon, bonefish, and permit. The tropical waters are teeming with life, and the thrill of battling a powerful tarpon under the warm Florida sun is an experience like no other.
Everglades National Park
Another fantastic spot in Florida is the Everglades National Park. This unique ecosystem offers incredible fishing opportunities for species such as largemouth bass, peacock bass, and snook. Navigating through the mangroves and marshes was an adventure in itself, with the chance to see alligators and a diverse range of birdlife adding to the excitement.

California

Los Angeles
Moving to the West Coast, Los Angeles and San Francisco offers a surprising variety of fishing experiences. From the piers of Santa Monica and Malibu, I enjoyed shore fishing for halibut, sea bass, and mackerel. For a more adventurous trip, chartering a boat for deep-sea fishing provided the opportunity to catch yellowtail, dorado, and even the occasional shark.
Northern California
Northern California is a haven for freshwater fishing. Lake Tahoe, straddling the border of California and Nevada, is famous for its crystal-clear waters and abundant fish population, including rainbow trout and lake trout. Fishing in the serene environment of Lake Tahoe, surrounded by majestic mountains, was both relaxing and rewarding.

Alaska

Kenai River
Alaska is a dream destination for anglers seeking the ultimate wilderness experience. The Kenai River, renowned for its massive king salmon, did not disappoint. Catching a trophy-sized salmon in the pristine waters of the Kenai was a highlight of my fishing adventures. The river is also home to sockeye salmon, rainbow trout, and Dolly Varden, making it a diverse fishing spot.
Bristol Bay
Bristol Bay, located in southwestern Alaska, is another top location for salmon fishing. The bay is known for hosting one of the largest salmon runs in the world. Fishing here felt like stepping back in time, with the untouched wilderness providing a stunning backdrop. The sheer number of salmon made every fishing session thrilling and memorable.

Preparations for Fishing

Applying for an ESTA or eTA
When planning a fishing trip to the U.S. or Canada, it’s crucial to apply for the necessary travel authorizations. For the U.S., the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) allows you to stay for up to three months and is valid for two years. The application is straightforward and can be done online. For Canada, an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) permits stays of up to six months and is valid for five years.
Getting a Fishing License
In addition to an ESTA or eTA, you need a fishing license to legally fish in the U.S. or Canada. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uses the proceeds from fishing licenses to fund conservation efforts. In the U.S., fishing license requirements and costs vary by state, typically ranging from $10 to $30. You can purchase licenses online or at local retailers.

In Canada, fishing license regulations vary by province. In British Columbia, for example, an annual fishing license costs about 100 CAD, while a five-day license costs around 30 CAD. These licenses are also available online or at local stores.
