The southern coast of Italy, with its warm Mediterranean waters, is a haven for sea fishing. In Naples, I ventured out to the Bay of Naples, where the sea was alive with species such as gilt-head bream, amberjack, and red porgy. Battling a powerful tuna off the coast of Sicily was a highlight, the fish putting up an impressive fight. Fishing in Italy requires a bit of preparation, especially regarding permits. Unlike some other countries, Italy doesn’t have a universal fishing license. Each lake, river, or area has its own specific permit, which can be obtained at the local municipality (Prefettura). A copy of your ID is necessary, and a tax stamp (marca da bollo) must be purchased from a local tobacco shop (Tabaccheria). In some regions, you may also need an additional day pass, so it’s important to check the local regulations before heading out.
