Fishing Trips in Los Angeles

For any fishing enthusiast in California, Los Angeles offers an exciting and varied range of fishing experiences. Whether you’re drawn to the tranquil waters off the Southern California coast, the bustling piers, or the thrill of deep-sea fishing charters, LA provides unforgettable opportunities. Having explored many of these spots myself, I can confidently say that Los Angeles is an ideal destination for anglers of all levels.

Why fish in Los Angeles?

On my fishing trips around LA, I found incredible diversity in both fish species and fishing environments. Whether it’s the vibrant Pacific waters or the peaceful inland lakes, Los Angeles caters to all types of anglers. The warm ocean currents attract a variety of saltwater fish, while the nearby reservoirs and rivers offer excellent freshwater fishing. LA’s year-round sunny climate makes it a great fishing destination no matter the season.

Pacific Ocean

Los Angeles’ coast is a hotspot for sea fishing, and trips along the Santa Monica and Long Beach coasts have provided some of my most memorable catches. One afternoon off the coast of Catalina Island, I hooked a powerful yellowtail—a thrilling experience that I’ll never forget.

Species such as halibut, barracuda, and white sea bass are common here, and whether you’re fishing from a charter boat or casting off one of the many public piers, there’s always a chance for a big catch. For beginners, piers like those in Redondo Beach or Malibu offer great shore fishing for mackerel, surfperch, and calico bass, while more experienced anglers can venture offshore for larger game fish like yellowtail or tuna.

Deep-Sea Fishing

The deep waters of the Pacific off Los Angeles offer fantastic opportunities for big-game fishing. Chartering a boat from places like Marina del Rey or Newport Beach, I’ve had the chance to chase after larger species such as tuna, mahi-mahi, and even sharks. The experience of reeling in these giants is both challenging and exhilarating, and the abundant marine life in Southern California makes every deep-sea trip a new adventure.

The warm waters near the Channel Islands are a particular favorite for deep-sea anglers. My trip to the Catalina Channel yielded several yellowfin tuna, a testament to the richness of these waters.

Inland Lakes and Reservoirs

Los Angeles also has its share of freshwater fishing opportunities. One of my best experiences was at Castaic Lake, where I caught several largemouth bass. Nestled just north of the city, it offers a peaceful escape with excellent bass fishing. The nearby Pyramid Lake is another favorite, known for its striped bass and trout. For a relaxing day of fishing in a scenic environment, these reservoirs provide a refreshing alternative to the bustling coastline.

Insider tips for fishing in Los Angeles

Based on my experiences, timing and location are key. Early morning or late afternoon is prime time for catching bass in the lakes or yellowtail in the Pacific. For pier fishing, using live bait like anchovies or squid often attracts bigger catches. Additionally, joining a local charter boat crew can provide valuable insider knowledge of the best spots and techniques, boosting your chances of success.

Preparations

  1. Applying for an ESTA or eTA
When planning a fishing trip to the U.S. or Canada, it’s crucial to apply for the necessary travel authorizations. For the U.S., the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) allows you to stay for up to three months and is valid for two years. The application is straightforward and can be done online. For Canada, an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) permits stays of up to six months and is valid for five years.
  2. Getting a Fishing License
In addition to an ESTA or eTA, you need a fishing license to legally fish in the U.S. or Canada. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uses the proceeds from fishing licenses to fund conservation efforts. In the U.S., fishing license requirements and costs vary by state, typically ranging from $10 to $30. You can purchase licenses online or at local retailers.

In Canada, fishing license regulations vary by province. In British Columbia, for example, an annual fishing license costs about 100 CAD, while a five-day license costs around 30 CAD. These licenses are also available online or at local stores.
  3. Planning Your Fishing Adventure
With your ESTA or eTA and fishing licenses in hand, you’re ready to explore some of the most fantastic fishing spots in North America. Whether you’re chasing tuna in the warm waters of the Florida Keys or experiencing the grandeur of Alaska’s salmon runs, the adventures are endless. So, book your flights, pack your gear, and get ready for an unforgettable fishing trip in the diverse and beautiful landscapes of the United States.
